Can I just say that I am SO STOKED you're here?!?!?!

Truth- I am.

You might be wondering who the heck I am- well, I'm Sam, and Creatives in Harmony is my BABY.

On any given day, you can find me curled up on the couch, getting as comfy as humanly possible. I'm ALL ABOUT being comfy. You know when doggies sometimes go to any means necessary to find that perfect spot? Well, yeah... that's me.

I'm also huge homebody and even bigger introvert, so it's rare to find me out and about.... I will say, though, that Bend, Oregon is a freaking beautiful place and I couldn't ask for a better town to go exploring in! I'm also a coffee obsessed (really, really obsessed... maybe too obsessed?) dog lover who loves all things art and music

Oh, yeah... I MIGHT have a tendency to lean toward sarcasm *like, huge tendency* and I'm ridiculously clumsy. That's right- I'm a huge freaking klutz. You can typically find me, well, running into shit and tripping over myself.

But anyway....... What's behind Creatives in Harmony?

First off, I'm a FIRM believer in the power of creative expression. Creativity is literally what drives us as humans. It's what has enabled us to be true to ourselves, to invent amazing things, and really, it's what makes the world what it is.

I've struggled with depression for the majority of my life. I've been to therapy numerous times, I'm on medication (and not afraid to admit it, because there is NO SHAME in that- despite what society might say), and I've tried just about everything to overcome the dark cloud hovering over me.

When I was in college I was studying psychology. I learned numerous methods and treatments for depression, some of which worked wonders, while others were just.... womp woooooomp.

I discovered the world of art therapy and creative self expression. I've always been artistic, coming from a family of artists and creatives. I always kind of dismissed it because I didn't understand the true transformative powers of not only creativity itself, but the creative process.

Let's be real- sometimes words just aren't enough. Some emotions, thoughts and feelings can't exactly be articulated, or they might be too painful to be put into words.

If you're sitting there thinking "but, I suck at art, I'm not creative" etc, BELIEVE THIS: You are, whether you think so or not.

Creativity doesn't have to be about making art, or music, or writing... it can be infused into your day-to-day life. Sure, visual arts is a way to express creativity, but some people use their creative expression in different ways- ie: problem solving, decorating, cooking, woodworking, dancing... the list is seriously ENDLESS

So, what do you do about those emotions that are SO.FREAKING.HARD. to pinpoint? What happens when something is too painful, or too abstract to really put into words (at least, logical words?) What will actually liberate your thoughts and feelings, while giving you a sense of self awareness and inner peace?

We've all heard of self care. It's essentially any practice or activity that brings you a sense of peace and relieves stress and anxiety. Self care can be literally anything you do that makes you feel calmer, happier, more positive, etc.

So, what is creative self care?

I like to think of it as a super effective, crazy powerful form of self care. It can involve writing poetry, journaling, painting, writing music, cooking, taking photographs- ANYTHING that you can use for self expression is something you can use for self care.

FOR REALS- Creative self care literally saved my life.
